- Fort Collins, CO-Keith Jerome Schiager was born in 1930 in Hot Springs, South Dakota, to Arthur and Emelie Schiager. He died peacefully in the presence of his family on March 3, 2021.
Because his father was in construction, Keith attended a different school almost every year. In 1943, his father bought General Hardware in Colorado Springs and Keith graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1947. He attended Blair Business College in Colorado Springs, and Wheaton College in Illinois. He served four years in the Air Force during the Korean War as a Mobile Training Instructor on airborne radar and armament. He was awarded a Commendation Medal for a technical maintenance improvement invention.
He married Barbara Jean Ficklin in Colorado Springs in 1951. They had four daughters and one son; the second daughter, Sandra Lynn, died at age two.
Keith completed a BS in physics at Colorado State University. He then worked as a Health Physicist at Argonne National Laboratory for four years. He earned an MPH and PhD degree at the University of Michigan. He was an active member in the Health Physics Society and the American Academy of Health Physics, rising to serve as president of both organizations.
Keith worked on the faculties of Colorado State University, Los Alamos Laboratory and the University of Pittsburgh. He finished his career as Director of Radiological Health at the University of Utah and retired in 1994.
In 1975, Keith married Janet Elizabeth Albrecht Cason, whom he met at Los Alamos. In addition to his four living children, she brought three sons to the blended family.
As part of Keith's career in health physics, he and Jan were able to visit foreign countries on official business, often combined with pleasure. They traveled widely to more than sixty countries, as well as throughout the U.S.
Keith was a member and elder in the Presbyterian Church and participated actively throughout his life, most recently at the Wasatch Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City. He also led Bible studies at Utah State Prison and at the Highland Cove Senior Living Community.
He will be remembered not only as a creative health physicist, but as a person who treated his family and everyone around him with respect, dignity, fairness and love.
Keith was preceded in death by his loving wife Janet, and survived by his children Karen Kingsley, Alicia (Pat) Devlin, Gretchen Schiager and Jerome (Cheryl) Schiager, his step-children Jeffrey (Gail) Cason, Timothy (Renee) Cason and Christopher (Karen) Cason, grand-children Lauren, Jessica, Joel, Elias, Sophia, Gabriel, Sydney, Graham, Molly, Ryan and Carley, and great-grand-children Tyler, Alexis, Curtis, Theodore, Jason and Scarlett.
